First Week of School

Well, you have now been in school for 4 whole days!  In English, we have discussed many items that were probably new and maybe a little scary or intimidating.  The following are items I would like you to take a moment to think about:

  • What does being an 8th grader mean to you?  What do you feel is your place at MGJH?  How is this different than being a 7th grader?
  • I told you that you will be reading 20 books this year.  How did you feel when I told you this?  What are your feelings now?
  • Most of your work this year will be turned in on your e-portfolio.  How do you feel about this?  Do you have any concerns or questions about the e-portfolio?

Please respond to this post and answer all of the questions above.  Make sure to respond by 8:10 am on Monday, September 10th.

  1. Being in 8th grade means more homework and more responsibility. When you said we would be reading 20 books this year, I was not feeling very excited. There is a lot of on-line work required in your class, and I do not have internet access 1/2 of the week, because I stay at my moms Mon and Tues and dad’s on Wed and Thur (and he doesn’t have internet). So, this should be an interesting year of English.

  2. Being an 8Th grader to me means more responsibility and higher expectations. I feel that my place at MGJH is to be a kind and responsible student. It is different from 8Th grade.because you are older and younger kids look ups to you.

When you told us that we would be reading 20 books this year I thought that it was ridiculous. Now i feel that it will be easy to read 20 books this year.

I think that the fact that most of the assignments that we do this year will be turned in online is a lot easier because technology makes things a lot easier to get things done.I have no questions or concerns.

  3. I thought that the 20 books sounds hard. Be a 8th grader is different because you dont get as mutch attention as you did last year.

  4. What does being an 8th grader mean to you? it means to me that im not the youngest now and im not the oldest and im more mature. What do you feel is your place at MGJH? i feel good about my place How is this different than being a 7th grader? im not the youngest any more.
I told you that you will be reading 20 books this year. How did you feel when I told you this? i dont like this because i dont like reading. What are your feelings now? i still dont like this.
Most of your work this year will be turned in on your e-portfolio. How do you feel about this? im ok with it Do you have any concerns or questions about the e-portfolio? no i have no questions

  5. Being an 8th grader means having a greater responsibility in school. I feel like i fall in the category of the some what leader because i like helping out my fellow classmates. I felt like 20 books is to much i still have the same thoughts. I think the eportfolio is gonna be a little confusing at times.

  6. In 8th grade there are new teachers, new work, and new people. There will also be some things things that are no so new like a few of the teachers, some review work, and the building. I hope I do well in 8th grade like in 7th. I would like it to be easier, but i doubt it. At first, when I heard we were going to read 20 book it sounded like a tough challenge, but I am up to the challenge. For this year, I hope I do well in this class.

  7. I think being 8th grade is like being a role model to the seventh graders. My place in MGJH is preparing us or me for high school and college. this is different from a seventh grader because we 8th graders know our way around the school unlike some of the seventh graders. i felt like wow this sucks or this is gunna be a hard class. But now im getting to understand that it’s not so bad after all. I feel good about the whole E-portfolio thing. No i do not have any questions about the E-portfolio.

  8. Being in 8th grade means i made it this far and i passed all my grades and now im in this one. What i feel my place is in MGJH is showing 7th graders how your suppose to act while they are attending school. This is different from being a 7th grader because i feel as if i have more things to learn and i have to stay well organized so i can be succesful.
I Felt that its going to be alot to read and i dont know if im going to be able to do that. But now i feel as if i can do it because i actually picked up a book and started to read it and i have a couple pages more and its only been a week that i’ve been reading the book.
How i feel about my work being on the e-portfolio is kind of good because its pretty easy to work with. And i have no concerns or questions about the e-portfolio.

  9. 8th grade mean to me being older and a role model and trying harder to do well and prepare for 9th grade

Reading 20 books seems overwhelming but you made it sound simple so it should be okay with 2 weeks for 1 book I can manage

Doing work on the portfolio seems fine I am no computer wiz but I can figure it out and manage soo plus I know what to do so I won’t get to confused

  10. Being a 8th Grader to me means that I should be a rolemodel to all of the new seventh graders that just started and don’t know thier way around the school yet and also I have alot more responibilties then 7th grade. I dont know what my place is at mgjh yet but I will soon. When you told us that we were reading 20 books I was nervous about not being able to finish all of them but when you said most classes were reading 30 I was relieved. I think turning work into the e-portfolio is a great way to do homework ,sometimes people loose the paper so I think it is a great way to be able to turn it in online

  11. It means having more responsibility and you get more freedom. I feel like my place at MGJH is to get good grades so that i can go to a good college. It is different than being a seventh grader because you would get pushed around by the 8th graders last year and this year that doesn’t happen. I thought it would be extremely hard at first because I had never read that many books in 1 year but now i don’t think it will be that hard. I think it will be very different because usually we turn stuff in by hand instead of on the computer. Nope.

  12. I think that 8th grade isnt that different. we have the same responsibilities and every teacher expects something different from every student. I feel great about reading 20 books! I love reading and I can read a lot. I feel more old fashioned. I would rather do everything hand written and turn it in on time and everything old fashioned. The E-portfolio is very confusing to log on and just get started but otherwise its great! I guess ill just have to get used to everything!

  13. I think 8th grade is different from 7th grade from the rank that people set for grades with the 9th graders running the pack the 8th graders loyal members and the 7th grader provong there loyalty. When i heard that we were reading 20 book i was shocked then when you said we would have had to read 30 i was so thankful, because i think im one of the slowest readers ing the grade and having to fund a book with a 1000 rank in lexile isnt easy to find with low amounts of word in the book. With everything being done online im just hoping i wont forget to do it.

  14. being an 8th grader means i have to be a leader and i have to be focused no matter what so i can get grades. I feel our generation is helping mgjh for the future of the younger kids so the can have the best years as possible. being a seventh grader we had to rely on eighth graders and now they rely on us to help them which is a good feeling. I was upset to here that we needed to read 20 books but when it only had to be 150 pages and 300 and up made 2 or more books really got me excited for it. I feel that if we read close to the amount you want us to we can accomplish this in no time. I think the e-portfolio will benefit us so we can be responsible enough to turn it in when its do instead of being sick and turn it in on monday. I think its a brilliant idea and i have no questions

  15. being an 8th grader means that i am not going to act like a little kid and be good role modle for the other 7th graders because i know it was hard for me when i was in 7th grade since i dident know anybody and had know idea what to do on the first day. so i wouldent want anyone else to feel that way to. I am realy happy that we only have to do 20 insted of 30 books .I have no questions.

  16. Being in 8th grade means we will have more work. My place at MGJH is being in the middle. This is different because we have music and gym every day. When you told us we will be reading 20 book, I feel like that is many books. I think now I can do it. I think e-portfolio is exciting but a little coufusing. I think it will work. I have no questions.

  17. Being an 8th grader means that I am more responsible for things and also to be a role model. Its different from 7th grade because I am more familiar with the building and have classes and teachers this year. When you told us we were reading 20 books this year i was shocked, but when you told us most classes were doing 30 I was relieved. I am happy we are doing the E-portfolio because I wont forget my assignment at home anymore. I am also concerned that i will forget to do this assignment online because I am not used to it.

  18. Being an 8th grader means more responsibility for me. I dont know what my place is yet in MGJH. It’s different from being a 7th grader because we have more responsibility and we have different teachers and a few different subjects than 7th graders. At first I felt like it was a lot of reading and a lot of books, but then you said that other classes had to read 30 so I was happy. Now I’m okay with it. I dont know how I feel about it yet because Im not used to using computers to turn in homework. I dont have any questions right now but I might later on.

  19. Being an 8th grader means that I passed 7th grade. My place at MGJH is great now, because now im not called a sevie everytime im in the halls.. im older, I made new friends already, I help the 7th graders find there classes. I’m very excited for this year.
When you told us that we had to read 20 books this year i was scared, and nervous. i felt this way because I dont read alot so I think it wil be sorta hard for me to adjust from reading a little.. to alot.and even no im still nervous about it.
Yes. Im ver happy about the E-portfolio because, now i can turn in things digitally and not have hand write everything. although Im concerned about service.. sometimes the internet service doesnt like to be on for a few days. so if it ever goes out unexpectedly, it wont come back on for 2-3 days sometimes.. but other than that its a great idea.

  20. Being an eighth grader means that I have responsibilities. My place is being the middle group out of the other grades. It is different just from the fact that I am not a “sevie” anymore, and that no older kids bother me.
I felt like that was a lot, but then you said other teachers make you read a book a week, so I figured that wasn’t that bad ! Now I feel kind of rushed to read twenty-five pages a night especially when I have things going on. I don’t really like the concept of having it online in case something happens with the internet, or if something happens with your computer you have no other way of doing the assignments ! I feel that it isn’t really a good thing, but in some cases it is.

  21. Being an 8th grader means to me that i need to become more mature, take on more responsibility, and be a good student. Its different from being a 7th grader because we get treated different and are given hard homework. I felt that those many books will be a lot but i said i need to just put my mind to it and read them, and now i feel like thats not too many because other school probably read way more. E-portfolios are amazing beacuse it is easier to get home work in and say if u were gone u would be able to turn in your homework in your e-portfolio. I dont have any else concerns or questions of anything.

  22. Being An 8th Grader Means Alot To Me Personally . I Think My Place At Maple Grove Junior Is To Be A Role Modle To The Sevies . I Have More Responsibility Then i Did Last Year . When You Told Me/Us That We Had To Read 20 Books I Was Really Suprised Because to Be Honst I Dont Like To Read That Much . Im Feeling Better Because It Doesn’t Seem As Hard As I Though . I Feel Good && No

  23. Being in 8th grade means that there are more expectations from me… my place in MGJH is im not a sevie im and im an 8th grader and i know more about the school and the staff. now that im older the 7th graders will look up 2 me (maybe) and i have to be the role model. Going into this year i am ver excited at what is to come! The E- portfolio looks interesting buttttttttttttt a little confusing!! i hve no questions… ooo and i am ver optimistic about reading 20 books. but ast year i only read 1 book and not too blame it on my teacher but she didnt really enforce book reading…:? i know i will finish my goal of 20 books!

  24. Being an 8th grader means that I am in 8th grade. My place at MGJH is being in the middle group. It’s different because I’m older & have different classs this year. I felt excited. Now I feel the same way. The E-portfolio seems exciting. I am concerned that it might not work at home because I have a really old computer and my parents think its fine but you can’t even look at videos on it.

  25. Being a 8th grader to me means that I have more responsibility. I don’t what my place is in the 8th grade. In 7th grade it took some getting used to to find my around the school but now I now I where to go. When you told us we had to read 20 books this year I wasn’t that worried because I read over 30 books last year. I don’t really like the idea that I have to turn my work in online but I’m okay with that. I don’t have any questions about the E-portfolio.

  26. It means more responsibility more work and more challenges. My place a MGJH is being a student and working hard to be a great one. It’s different being an 8th grader because you seem to a tad bit more homework and responsibility. When I heard you say that we would be reading 20 books I freaked a little but then I decide it was a challenge I was willing to accept. I think turning work into an e portfolio is a good idea I like it, it means less paper and wrist cramps when making papers we can just type it up and post it. So yes looking forward for a great year

  27. being an 8th grader means no longer in 7th grade. i’m not sure of my place at mgjh but im sure ill find out eventually. its different from 7th grade because im more familiar with the building and staff. i was surprised but when i heard oter classes were reading 30, i was relieved. i feel like the e portfolio will be confusing but i think ill be able to use it well. i have no questions.

  28. What being in 8th grade means to me is I have a lot of thing’s to do and need to be responsible with my time. I feel that i am in the middle of everybody not on top or on the bottom. Being in 8th grade is different from 7th grade because it seems to be that it moves faster and you become a lot more busy. When I heard you say we were going to be reading 20 books I was super nervous, but when you told me that one book equaled 150 pages it made me feel a little better. I feel great with the internet it is my parent’s computer’s sometimes don’t work so what should I do?

  29. Being an 8th Grader means more responsibility and more being counted on . And I dont know what my place is yet . Also when you told us we have to read 20 books , I was thinking haha yeah right im not reading nothing . And now , I think its really going to be really easy even though I hate reading . About the E-Portfolio I think its awsome doing on computer work is so much better and fun then writing on paper.

  30. Being an eigth grader to me means being a role model. I feel my place is to be a role model. It is different than being a 7th grader because we are no longer the little guys. I feel scared about it and dont feel im going to be able to do it. Its good and bad for me because i forget homework at home sometimes but im not comfortable with hw online yet.

  31. Being an eighth grader means that it’s another year of junior high and one more year until I get my permit. My place in MGJH is learning and preparing for high school and college. It is different from being a 7th grader because I know my way around the school.
I felt challenged and now I feel determined
I feel good about it and no I have no questions
